WHY CAUCUS?

Below information from: https://mngop.com/precinct-caucus-conventions-info/

In Minnesota, political parties are organized and conduct business at precinct caucuses and conventions. Caucus is the first step in the process to making recommendations for changing and adopting the State Party Platform, selecting Party Officers, and endorsing candidates for state and national offices.

We need you to come out on Tuesday night so we can activate our Saint Paul base!

Caucus will be on Tuesday, February 25, at 7:00PM-arrive by 6:45pm.  You can find your caucus location here.

Precinct Caucuses

A precinct caucus is held every 2 years, in even numbered years. A caucus is a gathering of like-minded neighbors to organize your local party unit, to give party members an opportunity to be heard, and to hear the views of others.

To participate at Caucus, you must be 18 years old at the time of the next election (November 3rd, 2020) and live within the precinct to participate. For the first time since 1992, Minnesota will not have a Presidential Preference Ballot at caucus, but we encourage you to vote in the March 3rd Presidential Primary!

Here is a quick overview of the process of caucus night:

  1. Attendees will provide their contact info (name, address, phone, & email) and sign to affirm they are members of the Republican Party.
  2. Election of a chair & secretary of the caucus, plus the appointment of tellers.
  3. Precinct officers will be elected to serve a 2 year term.
  4. Delegates and alternates will be elected to attend the annual BPOU (Basic Political Organizational Unit) convention.
    • Precinct elected delegates and alternates are also voting members at Saint Paul Republican City Committee meetings.
  5. Election Judges, Poll Challengers, and other volunteers will be recruited.
    • You can sign up to be an election judge here.
  6. Additions and changes to the State Party Platform will be discussed
    • Caucus is your chance to submit recommended changes to the State Party Platform.  This is the only time when suggested changes are collected.
    • You can find a copy of them here: Resolution Form & Republican Party of MN Standing Platform.
    • After Caucus, those platform resolutions are brought to the BPOU Conventions to be discussed and voted on.  The resolutions receiving a favorable vote are moved to the Congressional District Conventions.  The resolutions receiving favorable votes at the Congressional District Conventions are then taken to the State Convention for the Party Platform Committee to review and organization proposed changes. The proposed changes will then be discussed and voted on at the State Convention.

Basic Political Organizational Unit (BPOU) Conventions:

BPOU Conventions are the next step in the MNGOP party process.  Delegates and alternates elected at their caucuses will move on to participate in their BPOU convention where they will:

  • Elect delegates and alternates to the Congressional District and State Conventions
  • Vote on platform resolutions passed on from Precinct Caucuses
  • Conduct other local party business
  • Endorse candidates for State House and Senate

Attend Caucus on Tuesday night and help kick off the 2020 political year!

Again, you can find your caucus location here.

Regards,
Saint Paul Republican City Committee Officers
